Has any one finished reading Deathly Hallows,if then please answer this question?

In the battle of Hogwarts Voldemort places the sorting hat on neville longbottom and burns it and we presume that it is destroyed.But in the prologue Harry says to his son to ask the sorting to place him in Gryffindor and his choice would be taken into account.From where had the sorting returned it was presumed to be destroyed ?
